Todd Michalek
My career began in 2011 when I joined the Marine Corps as a photographer. For five years I traveled around the world working for Combat Camera. The last year of my enlistment I spent evenings and weekends photographing high school sports as a freelancer for the Jacksonville Daily News, the community newspaper. This freelance work led to a full-time position as senior photographer for nearby paper, The New Bern Sun Journal. I left the newspaper to pursue a master’s degree in multimedia storytelling at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, which I completed April 2021. I’ve always been drawn to working with athletes, and while in Syracuse I photographed for the school’s athletic department. I’ve also freelanced for The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, a variety of small businesses and some musicians.
